Catholic Community in England and Wales prepares for Pope Francis’ Worldwide ‘Confession drive’

People across England and Wales will participate in a worldwide ‘Confession drive’ this weekend that has been initiated by Pope Francis, as an integral part of his Jubilee Year of Mercy celebrations. 24 hours for the Lord’ will run from Friday 4 to Saturday 5 March and will see teams of Catholic priests available in Cathedrals, and in some local churches in England and Wales, to dispense the Sacrament of Reconciliation, also called Confession. Similar gatherings will happen on every continent, with millions expected to visit churches for prayer and to receive the Sacrament.

Church Leaders: No evidence Sunday Trading proposals will bring substantial economic benefit to UK

Archbishop Peter Smith, Chair of the Bishops' Conference Department for Christian Responsibility and Citizenship, has joined church leaders in writing a letter to The Sunday Telegraph expressing concern that further deregulation of Sunday Trading laws is likely to "disrupt the rhythms of community life that are so integral to the common good".

Pope Francis cautions against arrogance and oppression and condemns those who abuse authority to feed corruption, slave labour and human trafficking

When the dimension of service is lost, “power transforms into arrogance and becomes domination and oppression”, nourishing the “underhanded dealings of human beings”. Pope Francis reminded the faithful of this risk at the General Audience on Wednesday, 24 February, in St Peter’s Square.

Bishops’ Conference welcomes forthcoming meeting between Pope Francis and the Patriarch of Moscow

The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales welcomes the long hoped-for meeting of the Holy Father Pope Francis and the Patriarch of Moscow, to take place in Cuba on 12th February. A primary objective in the pontificate of St John Paul II was the restoration of Christian unity, especially between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
