Vatican encourages Christians and Buddhists to join together in "unity and fraternity"

The Vatican has released its message for the Buddhist Festival of Vesakh with a call for Christians and Buddhists to work together to foster "a renewed and deepened sense of unity and fraternity among all the members of the human family".

Cardinal welcomes new bishop as "God's gift to us"

Cardinal Vincent Nichols says that Fr Robert Byrne has been "chosen" for the people of Birmingham - "a city of a thousand trades". In his homily for the Episcopal Ordination of Fr Robert as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Birmingham, the Cardinal described him as "God’s gift to us" and said "we welcome it from the depth of our faithful hearts."

Prayer Vigil for Fr Robert Byrne’s Episcopal Ordination

A Vigil of Prayer was held at Birmingham Oratory on the eve of Fr Robert Byrne’s Episcopal Ordination on 13 May. It was attended by the Oratory Fathers from Birmingham, Oxford, Manchester, London and York, together with Fr Robert’s friends and family members, including his parents and uncle, Fr John Rigby from the Diocese of Salford.

Prayers offered for Ukraine

At the conclusion of their Plenary Assembly on Thursday 7 May, the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales demonstrated solidarity with their brothers and sisters of the Ukrainian Catholic Church by concelebrating the Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom with Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, the Eparch of the Ukrainian faithful of the Byzantine Rite in Great Britain. This is the first time that all the Latin Rite bishops in England and Wales had together concelebrated at a Mass in an eastern Liturgical Rite of the Catholic Church. Prayers were offered for all in the Ukraine and for the estimated 35,000 Ukrainians in this country.

Rise in Vocations

Nearly 100 men and women entered convents, seminaries and religious houses across England and Wales in 2013. These entry figures include 44 men to seminary, 22 men to religious life and 30 women to religious life[1], representing a significant upturn in numbers over the past decade.

Papal Nuncio affirms Gospel of Life in speech to Bishops

The Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, His Excellency Archbishop Antonio Mennini, has shared his concern over the "sensitive issue" of the Assisted Dying Bill with the Bishops of England and Wales ahead of their plenary meeting in Leeds. The Nuncio, Pope Francis' representative in the UK, addressed the Bishops on the eve of their bi-annual plenary meeting taking place at Hinsley Hall, Leeds between 6-8 May 2014.
