The Birmingham Faith Leaders’ Group joins with the great majority of people across the world in condemning the attack which took place on Westminster Bridge and in the environs of the Palace of Westminster on 22 March. Many times in recent years we have, tragically, found it necessary to issue condemnations of such action both in the United Kingdom and abroad. The indiscriminate inflicting of terror, death and serious injury upon innocent people pursuing their everyday lives is indefensible and fundamentally contrary to the teachings of all our major faiths.

In recent years problems and difficulties in UK agriculture have increased. Financial problems, debt and bankruptcy are common, the incidence of crop and livestock disease is high and rural stress-related mental health problems, including tragic suicides are seen in many communities.

Today's Catholic News podcast looks east to Bangladesh, a country of 160 million people - 360,000 of whom are Catholics. That's a mere 0.2% of the population. But the Church is vibrant and thriving despite its minority status in a majority Muslim country. So much so, Pope Francis recognised the fact by appointing Archbishop Patrick D'Rozario the country's first Catholic cardinal in November 2016.

The Bishops of England and Wales are encouraging Catholics to play an active part in the General Election. While voting for any particular political party is a matter of conscience, the bishops encourage people to use their vote at this pivotal time for our nations, as we prepare to leave the European Union.

Pope Francis has appointed an English missionary to be bishop of a diocese that covers 2,000,000 kms2 in Algeria. Bishop-elect John MacWilliam is originally from Wimbledon and was educated in Sussex. He joined the British Army and saw active service in Northern Ireland and Oman before joining the Missionaries of Africa (known as the White Fathers).
